Kilingking Beach in Nusa Penida

It’s exhausting and beautiful—truly exhausting. My friend and I ventured there after visiting Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida, thinking we had already faced the worst. We were mistaken. Kelingking requires a 40-minute descent, with people ahead of and behind you, preventing you from stopping whenever you wish; you must keep moving. A good Samaritan advised us to go there late in the afternoon, as the sun would have made the effort significantly more challenging. I adored the path there; it’s a pleasantly refreshing adrenaline rush. At the bottom lies a vast beach where swimming is discouraged due to the strong currents that can sweep you into the open sea in seconds. The return journey was still tough, but as you are immersed in the pink, violet, and blue hues of the sunset, all you can think is that every step on the rock was absolutely worth it.

Nestled in the rugged and enchanting landscape of Nusa Penida, an island off the southeast coast of Bali, Indonesia, lies Kelingking Beach. Often referred to as a hidden gem and widely recognized for its distinctive T-Rex shape when viewed from the vantage point above, Kelingking Beach offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility that captivates the hearts of travelers from across the globe. This blog delves into the majestic allure of Kelingking Beach, providing insights into how to get there, what to expect, and tips to make the most of your visit.

Journey to Nusa Penida

The adventure to Kelingking Beach begins with a journey to Nusa Penida. Visitors typically start from Bali, taking a fast boat from Sanur or Padangbai to Nusa Penida. The trip takes about 30 to 45 minutes, offering picturesque views of the ocean and the island’s coastline. Upon arrival, the best way to explore Nusa Penida, including Kelingking Beach, is by renting a scooter or hiring a local driver, as the island’s rugged terrain and limited public transport can be challenging for newcomers.

The First Glimpse of Kelingking

The first view of Kelingking Beach from the cliff top is nothing short of breathtaking. The turquoise waters contrast sharply with the lush greenery of the cliff sides, shaping a natural marvel that leaves spectators in awe. The viewpoint offers several spots for taking in the scenery and capturing photos, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike.

The Descent to Paradise

The path to the beach itself is an adventure, marked by a steep and somewhat challenging descent. The hike down requires a good level of fitness and caution, as the path can be slippery and steep in parts. However, those who take on the challenge are rewarded with the soft white sands and crystal-clear waters of Kelingking Beach. It’s a pristine, secluded paradise, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and simply soaking in the serenity of this untouched part of the world.

Best Time to Visit

Kelingking Beach is stunning year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, the sea is calmer, making the beach more accessible for swimming and the skies clearer for photos. Early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended to avoid the midday heat and the crowds, offering a more intimate experience with nature.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: The hike to the beach requires sturdy footwear to navigate the rugged path safely.
  • Bring Water and Snacks: There are limited facilities once you leave the main viewpoint, so it’s wise to bring water and any snacks you might need.
  • Respect the Environment: Kelingking Beach is a natural wonder that we have the privilege to enjoy. Please respect the environment by taking your trash with you and leaving the beach as pristine as you found it.
  • Don’t swim!
